Exciting enough, summer is just around the corner!
Are you ready for taking that time away to relax by the pool, take a trip to the beach or if your lucky enough an exotic vacation? I know I am! But let’s not forget about our skin. I know you’re probably thinking, “Yep, I’m getting my tan on this summer”. Well that’s exactly what I want to talk to you about. Sunscreen, sunscreen, SUNSCREEN, and I’m not talking about that Hawaiian Tropic Tanning Lotion sunscreen with a SPF of 4. I want to educate you on the proper sun protection you need for your skin type.
Everyone has a skin type, whether it’s normal to oily, a combination, or normal to dry. You need to pick your sunscreen accordingly. There are two types, chemical and physical. Physical sunblock sits on top of the skin while chemical sunscreens penetrate and is activated by the sun itself.
For normal to oily/acne prone skin types your best sun protection is going to be a physical sunblock. The two main ingredients in physical sunblocks are Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. Make sure the sunblock you choose is 100% physical sunblock. There are a lot of sunblocks out there that are a combination of physical and chemical. Chemical sunscreens aggravate your acne prone skin.
For those of you who have a little bit of both, the combination skin type, your best sun protection is going to be the physical sunblock as well. For our combination skin types usually your oily areas are located in the T-zone or in the cheek area. It’s best to stick with the physical sunblock because it’s better to be on the safe side and not get your oily areas aggravated by the chemical sunscreen.
For normal to dry skin types your best sun protection is going to be a chemical sunscreen. A couple ingredients found in a chemical sunscreen are Avobenzone and Octinoxate. Because your skin can absorb the chemicals in the sunscreen, it will also hydrate your skin while it’s being protected. For all skin types it is best to look for sunscreens with a SPF of 30 and nothing less than an SPF of 15.
